Carisbrook's demise was the end of an era for Otago. Shawn McAvinue tracks down those lucky enough to have secured a memento of the stadium before it was demolished.

From the fallen ruins of Carisbrook a Mosgiel petanque club rose.

Petanque Taieri committee member Fay Tikey said the club was established in Mosgiel last summer and the committee bought 10 Rose Stand seats to be installed on the side of the piste this summer.

The piste was a ''gravelly'' petanque terrain - the difference between a rookie and champ petanque player was their accuracy in reading the piste.

''Because they are all different, you can play at ours and it will be completely different from playing at St Clair or Caversham because they are all built differently.''

Although the final purchase price would not be disclosed, the committee members had been ''unanimous'' on securing the ''stunning'' rimu seats.

''We thought it was a good opportunity to have some Carisbrook history in our new club.''

Many of the 54 club members had been frequent visitors to Carisbrook, she said.

''The best game I ever went to at Carisbrook was the NPC final between Otago and Waikato in 1998.

"That was the best atmosphere of any match I've ever been to - it was absolutely electric. You couldn't hear a thing for the cow bells. It was awesome.''

Club president Richard Hambleton said the expense was never a barrier to the club buying some Carisbrook history.

''It is lovely to think we have a piece of Dunedin history because Carisbrook is a special place to all of us and that helped with the decision ''Mr Hambleton's enduring Carisbrook memory was Australian rugby player David Campese ''goose-stepping'' his way down the left wing to score.

Campese was famous for his goose-step that left opponents stumbling to try to tackle him.

Campese played for Australia against Otago at Carisbrook in 1982 and in 1990.

''It was the most beautiful run I'd ever seen.''

Petanque Taieri was creating its own sporting history with the Rose Stand seats.

''It's lovely to have a piece of serious Dunedin memorabilia for our new club. We think it's quite important.''
