In the first Newspoll since last month's election, Mr Abbott drew 47 per cent support as preferred prime minister, compared with Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, on 28 per cent, The Australian reported.
Mr Abbott also recorded his best net satisfaction since taking over his party's leadership in December 2009, with a rating of 13 per cent.
Of those surveyed, 47 per cent said they were satisfied with the prime minister's performance, while 34 per cent were dissatisfied and 19 per cent were undecided.
With regards to Mr Shorten, 32 per cent of voters were satisfied, 24 per cent were dissatisfied and 44 per cent were undecided.
The poll, conducted over the weekend, also shows Labour's primary vote has dropped from 33.3 per cent in the September 7 election to 31 per cent.
The coalition's primary vote has risen from 45.6 per cent at the election to 47 per cent.
