A fire in South Australia's Southern Mount Lofty Ranges continues to burn out of control, threatening lives and homes, firefighters say.
Fire crews battled the Sampson Flat fire through the night as it burned near One Tree Hill, Crouch Hill, Millbrook Reservoir, Mount Gawler, Devils Gully and Bare Hill.
In an alert message at 5am (local time) the Country Fire Service said the fire was travelling "in a very erratic manner" towards Golden Grove, Upper Hermitage, Break Neck Hill, Kersbrook Township, One Tree Hill Township and the Little Para Reservoir.
"There is a risk to lives and homes."
The CFS urged residents to leave only if the path was clear to a safe place and otherwise take shelter.
It advised that a fire in the Tantanoola and Glencoe area in South Australia's lower southeast region had slowed and the alert had been downgraded to a watch and act, but it could still threaten public safety.
It said residents of the Glencoe, Glencoe West, Tantanoola and Burrungle areas will need to remain vigilant as fire conditions may change due to fluctuating weather conditions.
Conditions are set to remain challenging on Saturday, with a gusty south westerly wind change set to bring thunderstorms and lightning.
The mercury is forecast to hit 39degC in Adelaide, with storms expected to reach the capital city at about midday.
Extreme and severe fire danger ratings have been forecast for most of the state, with total fire bans in place across all regions except Kangaroo Island and the Lower Eyre Peninsula.
