Class Act 2013 ten years on: The Catlins Area School

Where are they now?


2013: Leader of the school’s kapa haka group, Clarke was also named most valuable netball player at the southern area schools tournament. She wanted to be a primary school teacher.

2023: Since becoming a teacher, Clarke has continued to grow her professional learning in te reo. A year 7-8 teacher at Lyttelton Primary School, she holds curriculum leadership positions for technology and cultural responsiveness and supports six schools with their aspirations for teaching te reo Maori. She continues to support various kapa haka groups and has begun to write original waiata. She plays netball for Halswell and coaches her school’s senior netball team.




2013: A talented singer, Dodds had opened for Anika Moa at a local concert and been selected for the transtasman New Zealand area schools netball team. She hoped to become a lawyer.

2023: Since graduating with a law degree in 2019, Dodds has been travelling around Europe. At present, she and her partner are managing an alpine hut 1650m above sea level in a small town in Austria. She no longer sings but would like to play netball again in the future.
