But more widely, she is recognised for her writing of mathematics assessments and textbooks.
And now, she is becoming more prominently known as an award-winning maths teacher after receiving a Jim Campbell Mathematics Teaching Award from the New Zealand Association of Mathematics Teachers (NZAMT) for her contribution to the profession.
"It was a wonderful surprise — completely out of the blue.
"I am so overwhelmed. I used to go to the NZAMT conferences and see all these luminaries go up and get this award — people I really looked up to.
"I always wished I could be one of those people, and to actually win it — words fail me."
Seldom does she find herself speechless.
As well as teaching maths, she is a singer and pianist, and contributes the skills to the running of one of the school choirs.
Her pupils say it is not uncommon to see her roaming the halls, singing and whistling.
Mrs Laverty was nominated for the award by the Otago Association of Maths Teachers.
The award recognises personal excellence in primary or secondary classroom teaching, and the support given to others in enhancing their classrooms.
She has done considerable work running workshops and helping other teachers learn new skills and develop new ways of communicating maths.
She is already recognised nationally, in particular for her work in teaching statistics, and this award acknowledges her contribution to the teaching community.
