A classic tale will take a twist this weekend as the Wizard of Oz glides on to the ice.

More than 130 Dunedin-based ice skaters will perform a modern take on the classic story at the Dunedin Ice Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.

The performers will portray the story's images and characters as the audience is transported to the magical land of Oz.

Rehearsals had been running for the past two months, with participants ranging in age from 4 to over 60.

No-one else in New Zealand put on a show involving such a range of skating talent and ages, promoter Desley Anthony said.

"It's been a wonderful experience . . . It's a real buzz," Mr Anthony said.

Oz on Ice is the year's main fundraiser for the Dunedin Ice Skating Club. Tickets are $8 and are available from the Dunedin Ice Stadium and Eziprint Solutions. The shows are at 6pm on Saturday and 4pm Sunday.
