Dorothy and Lesley Mackle take a quiet moment from their 65th wedding anniversary celebrations in their Caversham home yesterday.

The pair married at the Methodist manse in Queen St on February 17, 1945.

She was aged 20 and he 22.

"It was fine.

"It had rained the rest of the week, but it was a lovely day," Mrs Mackle (nee Frye) said.

They met at a dance at the Purakanui school hall.

They have four children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The Mackles put their long marriage down to patience, tolerance and "just coping".

"We get on quite well together," Mr Mackle said.

Their family had gathered in Dunedin to celebrate the occasion and a family meal would be held tonight.
