Globe Theatre actors had a titanic struggle on their hands yesterday.

How to get their main set prop, a TS Waireka Sea Cadets lifeboat, into the diminutive theatre in time for the opening of their latest production, Titanic - Mary-Ann's Story, tomorrow.

''We worked the measurements out beforehand, but it was still a very tight squeeze through the door,'' producer Carol Krueger said yesterday.

''It looks like a huge lifeboat on stage, because the theatre's so small, and it's there for the whole play.''

The play was inspired by a little-known fact about the Titanic tragedy, Mrs Krueger said.

''The idea for the play started when I read that three dogs actually survived the Titanic. There were seven dogs on board the Titanic and three survived the sinking,'' she said.

''There's been so much written about the Titanic, but not about the dogs before. This is my own version of the Titanic, written to suit children and teenagers.

''It revolves around 17-year-old steerage passenger Mary-Ann and and two families from first class and how their lives are intertwined.''

The star of the show is poodle actor Sammy, who has previously appeared at the Globe as Toto in The Wizard of Oz and Nanna in Peter Pan.

Titanic - Mary-Ann's Story runs until Saturday.
