An urgent report is being prepared by Dunedin City Council staff about a contentious planned cycleway.

New information about the Albany St Connection project became available on Wednesday evening, prompting the action, council chief executive Sandy Graham said. Tenders on the project closed on Wednesday.

Ms Graham said the staff report would be released publicly on Monday, a day before the next council meeting.

A notice of motion signed by five councillors — seeking a significant revision of the project and suggesting an alternative cycleway route — was also being prepared this week, but is not in the meeting agenda.

One of the five, Cr Russell Lund, said Dunedin Mayor Sophie Barker had exercised her powers under standing orders to reject the notice.

Cr Lund said the rejection was on the basis staff were preparing a report on the same subject.

The report was being written with "unprecedented haste".

Cr Lund had suggested a cycleway route beside the Water of Leith.

It would be difficult for a staff report to include information about this option, he said.

The other four councillors who signed the notice were Jules Radich, Andrew Simms, Lee Vandervis and Brent Weatherall.

They said preliminary investigations showed the alternative route could save $1million.

"We think it’s a matter of great public interest and we owe it to everybody to fully investigate what appears to be a very sensible alternative," Cr Lund said.

Ms Barker said the situation was complicated.

"I think that perhaps new information has arisen, which means that the best way to proceed is with the report."
