A North Dunedin off-licence and its manager have been suspended by the Liquor Licensing Authority after liquor was sold to a minor at the premises in April this year.

Aju Liquor Ltd, which runs Uni Liquor, a shop at the rear of grocery store Uni Mart, on North Rd, has been suspended from trading for 10 days from 9am on Wednesday, October 1.

Il-Jei Park's general manager's certificate was suspended for six weeks from Monday, October 13, the authority's report and decision, issued last week, said.

The suspensions were requested by Dunedin police liquor licensing Sergeant Wayne Pitcaithly following a controlled purchase operation in April this year in which a 16-year-old male volunteer was sold two cans of beer in the business's unlicensed grocery store area by an employee who did not have a general manager's certificate.

The employee was to be dealt with in the Dunedin District Court, the report said.

Park was on duty and in another part of the store at the time.

He did not witness the sale.

Additionally, Park was convicted, fined and disqualified from driving for six months, following a drink-driving incident in December last year, the report said.

He was suspended for failing to conduct the licensed premises in a proper manner.

Park and the employee admitted the allegations against them and accepted the suspensions without the requirement to appear before a public hearing, the report said.
