Dunedin-based charity Animal Rescue Network is still trying to rehome cats which would otherwise have been left to fend for themselves after the death of the woman who cared for them.
Judith Egerton, who was struck and killed by a car earlier this month at the intersection of Dundas and Great King Sts, dedicated her retirement to caring for stray cats in her North Dunedin neighbourhood.
She spent much of her income feeding stray or abandoned cats, and rehomed many pets abandoned by students.
Animal Rescue founder Ana Andrianova said the extent of Ms Egerton’s cat-feeding activities were only now coming to light.
Earlier, she believed about 20 cats or kittens needed homes, but she had since found another five. In the past few days one cat has relocated to Oamaru, and two have found homes in Abbotsford.
"Another two people are taking two cats each, but there are still plenty more of them who need to be rehomed," Ms Andrianova said.
Quiet homes would be preferable, as would homes with a substantial section.
Many of Ms Egerton’s cats were virtual strays and used to life outdoors.
