Artist wants to make jewellery with some real bite

Are you looking for something to get your teeth into?

Maybe you can help Carolane Laniel.

The 27-year-old French Canadian artist is seeking human teeth with which to make her latest piece of artistic jewellery.

"I work with pretty much everything I can find - from bones to full animals - mummified, wet specimen, diaphonised ...

"I also make jewellery out of bones, like rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings and pendants."

So far, she has made her jewellery with animal bones and teeth, but now she is champing at the bit to flesh out her collection by creating a bracelet with human teeth - something she admitted would not be easy to come by.

"I don't want the front ones. I want the molars and wisdom teeth. They are the most easy to find, but still really hard to get my hands on.

"My flatmate got her wisdom teeth removed and I asked her if I could have them, but she wanted to keep them," she said with disappointment.

Miss Laniel's friends had varying views about her jewellery, ranging from "tasteful art" to "creepy" and "just plain disturbing".

"People think it's weird because it's unusual. People will assume that it is something dark or morbid because you work with the dead basically.

"But it's just to give another life to something that died, just make it live longer or give it a second life."

She said she had a deep respect for the bones and teeth she used in her work.

"If I work with animals, it's certified that it has been taken care of. I'll never kill something just to make something with it.

"If I find road-kill or a dead bird on the beach, I might keep it and freeze it until I can do something with it."

Miss Laniel is a fitting and turning engineer by trade, and creates artistic jewellery in her spare time.

If you fancy a bracelet made out of human teeth, you may have to wait a while.

She is still working on obtaining a work visa and cannot sell her art until she has.

She said anyone who wanted to donate their teeth for her jewellery, could contact her at SkullptureArt.

"Even if they are a little bit rotten or have fillings and stuff, I can still do stuff with them."
