Assaults at bars keep police busy

Saturday night was a bad night for fighting, Dunedin police say.

They reported being ''flat out'' following several assaults in and around central bars, Acting Senior Sergeant Dave Scott said.

A man was allegedly assaulted at the Moon Bar in St Andrew St at 1am yesterday before leaving the bar with his girlfriend.

''At 1.15am, he was walking home with his girlfriend when he got set upon on the corner of George St and Moray Pl.''

The man required treatment at Dunedin Hospital.

About the same time, police were called to Brew Bar in the Octagon following reports of a fight, and charged a person with disorderly behaviour.

They also arrested five people who were involved in a fight outside the same premises at 2.20am.

Two hours later, they were called to a spot in Princes St near the Octagon after reports of four males were fighting.

Acting Snr Sgt Scott was at a loss to explain the number of assaults, but said, ''Every now and again we have a night like this.

''People should remember to drink responsibly, keep an eye on their mates and have a plan to get home safely.''
