Auckland pie found NZ's best

Otago's best pies are found in Mosgiel.

The 2013 New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards judged a steak, bacon and mushroom pie by New World Mosgiel baker Jeremy Jones as the top pie in Otago, after it was highly commended in the cafe boutique category of the awards in Auckland last night.

A record 4500 pies from 505 bakers, including 38 Otago bakeries, were entered in this year's awards.

The supreme pie award went to a mince and cheese pie made by Greenland Bakery, in Auckland.

Entries this year included ostrich; pulled pork, peas, puha and scrumpy cider; duck breast, orange, bacon, mushroom and cream; tiger prawns, calamari, scallops and gurnard; and raspberry macaroon pie, red velvet pastry, raspberries, chocolate, cream and coconut.

''The beauty of these awards is that anyone from anywhere can win - from small bakers to the big commercial ones,'' chief judge Tim Aspinall said last night.
