Band of brothers' bonds still strong

Otago Mounted Rifles' reunions are quieter affairs these days, but the surviving regiment members still enjoy their annual get-together, secretary Clive Stringer says.

A vote was held at yesterday's luncheon at Mosgiel RSA to hold the reunion again next year, despite the standing joke that every year would be its last, Mr Stringer said.

In years gone by, the reunion took place over three days, attended by up to 500.

Bonds between the men remained strong, and were easier to keep as, unlike other regiments, its members were drawn from a compact geographical area, Otago and Southland.

Another strength was its fascinating history, which included participation in a raft of military conflicts including the Boer War, Mr Stringer said.

Members came from Oamaru, Southland, Central Otago, Mosgiel and Dunedin to the luncheon.

The regiment became known as the 5th Light Armoured Fighting Vehicle Regiment when the mounted regiment was disbanded in mid-1941, until being finally wound up in 1956.

Twenty surviving members, including six members of the mounted regiment, gathered with 30 supporters yesterday.

Mr Stringer said, as well as himself, the remaining mounted members were Dave Orr, Ivan Bulling, George Johnston, Clyde Boyes and Lex Meikle. One member of the horse mounted regiment, Norman Bresanello, had died since the last reunion.

This year is the 146th since the regiment was established in 1864. Don Mackay's history of the regiment is expected to coincide with its official birthday on November 4.

Dr Mackay attended the luncheon and gave members a progress report. An appeal for information had given him the "fortunate problem" of a great deal of material to compile. The history was to have been ready this month, but was taking longer than expected.

Dr Mackay told the Otago Daily Times it was possible the deadline would be extended to have it ready in time for next year's Anzac Day, but he was hoping to finish by November.
