Becoming citizens at ceremony

Saffron Lai (8) and her mother, Shiang-Feng Shen, reflected on becoming New Zealanders after a citizenship ceremony at the Dunedin Municipal Chambers this week.

Saffron read the affirmation aloud in a clear, steady voice to the gathered crowd, prompting Mayor Peter Chin to say: "She's the best so far".

Mrs Shen and daughters Saffron and Chloe Lai (11), who was born in New Zealand, moved permanently from Taiwan four years ago for the educational opportunities available here.

Mrs Shen said her husband, Chung Cheung Lai, had not yet qualified for citizenship.

Twenty-five people, including 15 from the United Kingdom, swore their allegiance at the ceremony.

People who became New Zealand citizens at the ceremony were. -Mrs Mina Crooks, Miss Jessie Smart (American); Mr Thomas and Mrs Patricia Lindsay, Mr Richard Sipthorp, Mr Robert and Mrs Helen Wilde, Mr Peter Booth, Mr Stephen and Mrs Maureen Gelfer, Mr Joseph O'Neill, Ms Susan Pennock, Mr Darren and Mrs Tracy Holgate, Mr James Vaughan, Miss Sacha Deveney, Mrs Ka Wha Sze (British); Mr Hrishikesh Pavaskar (Indian); Mrs Ingrid Douglas (Dutch); Mrs Dain Phone (Fijian); Mr Emmanuel Mapanda (Zimbabwean); Dr Sean Galvin (Irish); Mr Shady Magdy Moustafa Mahmoud Elfeky (Egyptian).
