Dunedin may have seen the back of the extreme weather that caused havoc and flooding last week, but periodic showers and strong winds could be expected this week.
The MetService said the weather system that caused last week's heavy, persistent rain had been replaced with a more westerly flow which was drier.
Philip Duncan, of Weather Watch, said while periodic showers could be expected, the wet weather was not going to settle on the east coast.
"They have a little bit of rain coming on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, but the rest of the week is just a few showers, a much much drier week for them," he said.
"We are not seeing anything like close to what we saw last week."
Strong winds inland and in the mountains could reach gale-force speeds, however.
"The biggest issue will probably be the strong winds," Mr Duncan said.
"Invercargill and Dunedin there will be some strong gusts for a time on Tuesday and Wednesday, maybe picking up again on Friday."
