Boaties call for harbour forum

Some boat clubs have slammed stakeholders over inaction on a proposed forum for the future of Otago Harbour.

At a ''Reimagining Otago Harbour'' panel discussion in October, the Otago Regional Council, Dunedin City Council and Port Otago agreed to create a ''harbour forum''.

It would include wider users such as boat groups and scientists to give them more input into decisions.

Graeme Wall, of the Port Chalmers Yacht Club, said he was ''extremely disappointed'' it had not eventuated.

''Nothing's happened. That's the short of it. We were going to sit around the table and get things done for once.''

The harbourside plan for the Steamer Basin would ''suck all energy'' away from other plans to improve the harbour, he said.

The original idea of the forum excited harbour users, he said.

''It was based on the notion of a vision for the harbour. We could give it some amenities.

''When you're on the harbourfront in Wellington there are public toilets, there are areas for kids to play.''

Macandrew Bay Boating Club commodore Roy Roker said he had hoped something would have happened sooner.

''Well, there were a lot of good ideas put forward, but no-one was put in charge to do it. It would be nice to see something happen, that's for sure.''

The Macandrew Bay club and Otago Peninsula Yachting Association would like to see the forum created, he said.

Ravensbourne Boating Club commodore Warwick Graham said he was not too bothered about whether the forum met.

''All the yachting clubs meet anyway. I think we just need to invite the ORC and DCC to those meetings.''

ORC stakeholder engagement director Sian Sutton said it was still committed to the idea.

''There haven't been meetings of that forum, mainly due to a changeover of CEO. That meeting in October was attended by Peter Bodeker.

''We are imagining the Otago Harbour as a collaborative effort and we need commitment from not just ORC, but DCC and the port.''

Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull said the focus had been on the development of the harbourside vision.

''The DCC will talk with the ORC about how to progress the forum proposal.''
