Rachel Platt does not normally read the public notices, usually "skimming" the Otago Daily Times at lunchtime.

However, after her boyfriend popped the question in yesterday's public notices, her phone rang hot with friends telling her to look at the paper.

Headed "HAVE YOU?", the notice asked identifying questions relating to Ms Platt's sports career, her nicknames and "a beautiful son starting with W".

"If so," the proposal continued, "WILL YOU MARRY ME MISS R. P. because you are dream come true and a princess who makes my heart skip a beat!"Ms Platt (33) went out to buy a paper, then stopped at the side of the road to ring her boyfriend, Craig Moir, in Christchurch to accept.

While her first instinct was to "kill him" for the unconventional and public manner of his proposal, Ms Platt said the gesture was the sweetest thing anyone had ever done for her.

Ms Platt, who works at R&R Sport, had not expected the proposal; the two had only been an item for about a year, although they had known each other since their early teens.

Mr Moir hoped to return to Dunedin after about 13 years in Christchurch where he works as a resource teacher for learning and behaviour, but first had to sell his house and get a new job.

The wedding date had not been set.

Mr Moir said he was delighted Ms Platt accepted, and he had many phone calls from friends and family who saw the notice.
