The demolition of a group of derelict buildings in central Dunedin has been delayed due to "unanticipated administrative issues".

Originally scheduled for September 25, the demolition was now expected to start on October 2, a spokeswoman for the developers said.

The properties at 380-394 Princes St and 11 Stafford St are owned by Totara Dunedin Properties and demolition is to be carried out by Scope Group.

The buildings have been in poor condition for years and dangerous building notices applied at part of the site.

The Dunedin City Council granted consent for their demolition in May.

"The developer still has a number of consent conditions to comply with before demolition can begin," a council spokesman said yesterday.

Project manager Iain Ferguson said the work would start at 11 Stafford St before progressing to the buildings in Princes St, primarily due to concerns related to access and safety.

"All the neighbouring buildings have been notified, and everything within the demolition plan has been agreed with the council," Mr Ferguson said.

The demolition is expected to take 10 weeks.

Plans for future site development have yet to be confirmed.
