A small business owner is devastated after a burglar smashed into the store and took off with its till and cash.

Flowers on Mornington owner Netta Truell says she took over the Mailer St business only about a month ago and yesterday became a target of crime.

"The business, it’s only a little one," she said.

"We only turn over so much a week and for this to happen just makes it so much harder.

"I’m devastated really."

The till contained about $200 in cash at the time of the burglary.

The burglar had smashed their way into the store through a window in the front door.

Police had told her the burglary occurred about 6.30am, she said.

"I feel really, really awful," she said.

"I can’t believe this would happen and it’s such an awful time as well, because I’m just starting up and trying to grow."

She was unaware of any other businesses in the area being targeted.

A police spokeswoman said no-one had been arrested in relation to the burglary and inquiries were continuing.
