Car in flames after crashing into tree at Outram

Dunedin police will use forensics to formally identify a person killed in a serious car crash early yesterday.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said a car burst into flames after crashing into a tree near Outram, at the intersection of Granton and Allanton roads at 2.20am.

‘‘We believe we know who the person may be, but it needs to be confirmed forensically.’’

He said there was only one person in the vehicle.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances of the crash.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said fire crews from Outram and Lookout Point stations attended, along with tankers from Waihola and Dunedin City, when the fire spread to some surrounding vegetation.

A fire investigator was at the scene yesterday.
