A Dunedin car owner only discovered their Nissan Bluebird had been stolen when police told them it had been destroyed by fire yesterday.

A Fire Service spokesman said firefighters from Lookout Point Station were called at 2.40am yesterday to a car which was ''well ablaze'' behind the sports pavilion at Corstorphine Park.

The firefighters were at the scene for about an hour.

Senior Sergeant Liz Waru, of Dunedin, said the 1994 car was stolen from Calder St, St Kilda.

Police inquiries into the theft and arson were continuing, she said.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said the car had not been reported stolen before firefighters were called to the blaze.
