'Chain reaction' expected in Dunedin

A sell-out crowd for the opening Argentina v England match was likely to start a chain reaction of ticket sales and focus attention on Otago Stadium, the tournament boss says.

Fewer than 500 tickets remain for tomorrow's match, the first Rugby World Cup pool game at the covered venue. In the past week, 4600 tickets have been sold for the four Dunedin pool matches.

Rugby New Zealand 2011 Martin Snedden told the Otago Daily Times the opening match at the stadium would be "one of the highlights of the tournament".

"It is the first international match at the stadium. Because it will be a critical pool match, will be a sell-out and have a very significant international broadcasting audience, as well as New Zealand audience. All of those factors come together and you know it is going to work."

He was confident both the Ireland v Italy and England v Romania games would sell out, with ticket sales to the England v Georgia match expected to "pick up" once people watched the opening match.

"[It's] going to have a chain reaction to the other matches.

"I am convinced Saturday night will be the best selling tool that we have got for the remaining matches in Dunedin."

Tickets for the England v Georgia match were available from $41 for adults, and $20 for children, according to the official website yesterday.

The stadium's capacity during the tournament has been reduced from 30,000 to 26,000, due to the large media contingent, sight-restricted seats around the perimeter of the ground, and seats needed for operational matters.

Mr Snedden, who will be attending tomorrow night's match, said the stadium would create much media comment during and after the match.
