Charged with taking bike

It seems the hardest thing about riding a bike is being caught by its owner and being held on the pavement until police arrive.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said two men decided to go on a bike ride in Northeast Valley about 8pm yesterday, but did not have bicycles to ride.

So one of the men allegedly disappeared around the corner and returned with two. The owner of one of the bikes spotted his cycle being ridden by someone else in North Rd, near Dunedin North Intermediate, and gave chase.

A minor altercation took place but the owner was able to hold the man until police arrived.

A 22-year-old man has been charged with theft of a bicycle and will appear in the Dunedin District Court next week.
