Punched hospital security guard: police

Police were called to Dunedin Hospital at 12.45am on Sunday after a 27-year-old man allegedly punched a security guard twice in the head while screaming racist remarks.

While restrained, the man threatened to kill the guards while continuing to aim kicks and punches at them, Sergeant Matt Lee said.

The man also resisted arrest and was charged with assault, threats to kill and resisting police.

The man would appear in the Dunedin District Court at a later date, Sgt Lee said.

• On Friday at 10.18pm, a 47-year-old man attempting to avoid an impairment checkpoint in King Edward St, South Dunedin, was stopped, breath-tested and found to be almost three times the legal limit.

He recorded a breath-alcohol level of 719mcg.

His licence was suspended for 28 days and he will appear in court at a later date.

• A 60-year-old man driving in Gladstone Rd, north Dunedin, was found to be more than four times the legal breath alcohol limit when he was stopped at 10.04pm on Saturday.

He recorded a breath-alcohol level of 1059mcg. He was charged with drink-driving, third or subsequent, his licence was suspended and he would appear in court at a later date, Sgt Lee said.

• At 1.07am on Sunday, a 23-year-old disqualified driver was stopped while driving in Portsmouth Dr.

While he pulled over, officers watched as the backseat passenger and the driver attempted to swap seats.

Police were not fooled and the man originally in the driver’s seat underwent breath-testing procedures.

He recorded a breath-alcohol level of 533mcg.

The man was arrested and charged with breaching his bail conditions, driving while disqualified and drink-driving, third or subsequent.

• Members of the public called police on Saturday at 1.14pm after they saw multiple cars doing burnouts in the carpark next to the Dunedin Ice Stadium in St Kilda.

When police arrived, a 20-year-old man driving a silver Honda Accord was in the middle of the carpark performing a burnout.

He then attempted to flee, but was stopped by police.

Officers discovered the man was on a learner’s licence and had a passenger in the car, Sgt Lee said.

His car was impounded and he was charged with sustained loss of traction.

The man would appear in the Dunedin District Court at a later date, Sgt Lee said.

• Police are searching for the driver of a Ford Falcon after he was seen by officers drifting his car around the corner into Helena St, South Dunedin, on Friday about 11.55pm.

Lights and sirens were activated by police, but the driver accelerated away.

Police decided not to pursue him, Sgt Lee said.

A short time later, the vehicle was found abandoned.

Police had discovered who the driver was, but had not spoken to him yet.
