An exhibition at the Sew Hoy Gallery will see hundreds of Chinese items from a private collection displayed for the first time.
‘‘In the Dragon's Footsteps'' was inspired by the success of the ‘‘Emperor's Dragons'' exhibition which ran at Otago Museum and features similar-styled pieces from private Chinese collector Dee Tang, of Dunedin.
Mr Tang, a former Chinese language and culture lecturer at Otago University, and his family have spent the past 30 years collecting the pieces, which range from jewellery cases to marble sculptures and giant vases and include ceramics, bronze pieces, lacquer ware and ornate furniture.
This is the first time Mr Tang has placed the entire collection on display and made pieces available for sale. Mr Tang said he moved the pieces to New Zealand about five years ago, after his mother sold her apartment in China.
‘‘Everything used to be stored at my mother's place in Beijing. When she sold her apartment we moved everything over here.
‘‘It is quite a unique opportunity for people interested in Chinese culture and decorative pieces because you won't find anything like this anywhere else in Dunedin.'' - ‘‘In The Dragon's Footsteps'' starts tomorrow at the Sew Hoy Gallery, 29 Stafford St, from noon to 4pm Tuesdays to Saturdays for a limited time.
