Climate demonstration targets ANZ banks

A small group of demonstrators gathered in front of the ANZ branch in George St, Dunedin, yesterday to protest against the bank ''sponsoring climate change''.

The demonstration, organised by Oil Free Otago and environmental group 350.org, was the third in the country this week.

The two other demonstrations were at ANZ branches in Christchurch and Auckland.

Spokeswoman for 350.org New Zealand Niamh O'Flynn said ANZ was targeted as part of the organisation's ''fossil-free banks campaign''.

ANZ is one of five ''gold sponsors'' of the Advantage New Zealand Petroleum Summit 2015 in Auckland next week, and the only bank among the 21 sponsors listed on the summit's website.

''They also have millions invested in fossil fuels,'' Ms O'Flynn said.

Commenting on the bank's position on climate change, an ANZ spokesman said ''we want to be part of the solution''.

''We recognise that the transition to a lower-carbon economy will take time and will require significant investment,'' he said.

''The banking sector has an important role to play in supporting the minerals and energy sectors through this change.''
