The weather played its part with temperatures reaching 24degC despite ''just a bit of short, sharp burst'' of rain late in the afternoon, Waikouaiti Rodeo Club secretary Logan Rowland said.
But even the rain provided the crowd with entertainment. ''It worked out well for the steer wrestling. It got them a bit muddy and was a crowd pleaser,'' he said.
The level of competition was high and also gave the crowd plenty to cheer about.
''We had all the top cowboys from all around New Zealand and they drew the top broncs,'' he said.
''It was 50/50 between the cowboys coming out on top and the broncs coming out on top.''
Several overseas based cowboys also took part. No animals were harmed during the day's proceedings, although ''a few of the cowboys have a few bumps and bruises'', he said.
''But nothing a week back at work won't fix.''
The event again raised funds for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, although the amount would not be known until today, he said.
