Tickets to see Scottish comedian and actor Billy Connolly in Queenstown for the first time in five years are expected to sell out, despite the increased capacity in the events centre.

Connolly brings his High Horse Tour to 12 New Zealand centres including ILT Stadium Southland, Invercargill on May 1, Queenstown Events Centre on May 4 and Dunedin Town Hall on May 7.

Queenstown Lakes District Council community facilities manager Michael Homan said inquiries about tickets had been received at the events centre even before the promotor confirmed the booking last Tuesday and well before tickets go on sale later this week.

Adjusting the layout of the indoor stadium in the centre boosted the maximum capacity to 1950 seats for the show, 100 more than for the previous major indoor concert, the Flight of the Conchords in June 2012.

Systems and procedures exist to manage crowds of more than 8000 people at the Frankton venue, but those numbers were for sports fixtures outdoors.

Mr Homan was thrilled Connolly wanted to return.

''It's significant for Queenstown and for the venue that the promoter has faith in us to deliver a professional international act,'' he said.

''It's one of the reasons for the events centre, so people in the area can see an act like this.''
