Contractors continue to remove material from the west bank of the Water of Leith, near the Dundas St Bridge this week.

Excavations being made on either side of the bridge in Dunedin mean the bridge must remain closed to vehicles and pedestrians because of ''reduced stability''.

A recent update report to the Otago Regional Council technical committee said the bridge had been closed on February 11 and it could not be reopened to vehicles or pedestrians until the works had been completed.

It was planned for the bridge to be reopened in August, but this was ''dependent on the time required to construct additional temporary ground support works''.

Flood-protection work linked to the bridge is part of the final stage of the regional council's Leith flood protection scheme, which is expected to cost more than $30million.

In February, the council said the remaining flood protection work included constructing a 17m culvert and vertical retaining walls, as well as making riverbed changes and widening the channel by up to 2m over a 25m length of the Water of Leith.
