Cost kills church conversion plan

"An excavator knocks down the old Mornington Baptist Church on the corner of Elgin Rd and English Ave yesterday.

The property is owned by Dunedin resident Ryan Priemus, who had initially intended to redevelop the building into a house.

The church was designed by Edmund Anscombe and built in 1911.

But the decaying state of the building and the need for earthquake strengthening made it cost prohibitive, he said.

The building was not in a good state and it wasn't weathertight either."

The church was demolished yesterday. Surrounding buildings on the site will be relocated to make way for a new family home.
