A high-speed police pursuit in Dunedin last night ended in a car crash and an arrest.
In a statement, a police spokeswoman said they engaged in a pursuit about 7pm after a driver failed to stop.
Police have confirmed a 19-year-old man has been arrested.
St John spokesman Ian Henderson said the man with moderate injuries was taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital's emergency department.
A southbound lane on the motorway was closed last night while the serious crash unit investigated.
The incident was referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
About 50 people watched the crash scene from the Green Island footbridge last night.
A man on the bridge said he was walking along Main South Rd, Green Island, when he heard a car braking heavily, and skidding, before a loud crash, as the car hit the median barrier.
The crashed car blocked the outside southbound lane.
A police officer interviewed a teenager standing in the southbound lane, as motorists travelled slowly south on the motorway shoulder, in single file, past the crash scene.
