Constable Sheree Clark, of North Dunedin, said the woman, in her mid-40s, was driving to her home at the top of Baldwin St about 9.15am, when her car skidded on the wet surface, spinning and crashing into a power pole (right).
The impact caused the power to be cut to a nearby house for about an hour.
The Mazda Familia car was badly damaged.
The woman was assessed by ambulance officers at the scene and was cleared to go home.
Const Clark said emergency services battled with the "greasy" surface on the steep street.
A fire engine from the Willowbank station skidded down the street and a tow truck had to wait until the street had dried before it could get enough traction to stop.
