Man reported for lewd act in Dunedin Botanic Garden

A man was reported to police for performing a lewd act while watching a woman stretch in the Dunedin Botanic Garden at the weekend.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said the man was seen on Sunday touching himself with his pants down while watching a woman stretch on a park bench, near Gore Pl on the Lovelock Ave side of the gardens.

It appears he left the scene before police could speak to him.

Over the past year, the Dunedin Botanic Garden has become a hot spot for reports of indecent behaviour, as has the St Kilda/St Clair beach area.

In September last year, a 47-year-old Timaru man was apprehended by staff after performing an indecent act in the lower garden women's toilets.

The Dunedin City Council announced in February this year a proposal to deploy two part-time rangers to patrol the garden during weekends, public holidays and other busy periods.

A council spokeswoman said the proposed initiative was part of the draft 2019-20 annual plan.

The rangers could start patrolling the gardens in the next financial year, if the proposal was adopted, she said.
