John-Boy Rakete (28) appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Tuesday charged with injuring with intent to injure, and was remanded in custody.

He will next appear on December 21.

The charge, which carries a maximum prison sentence of five years, was believed to relate to a robbery and serious assault in the Dunedin suburb of Maori Hill about 2am on December 5.

A police spokesman said the incident occurred in Claremont St.

One person was taken to hospital after the incident, in which witnesses said a man was hit in the head by a person with gang links.

One ambulance was sent to the scene. St John treated one patient in a moderate condition and took them to Dunedin Hospital.

 - A man has been arrested in relation to an assault on a Kiwibank staff member.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said police were called to Kiwibank in Moray Pl, central Dunedin, at 10am on Tuesday.

A 26-year-old man went into the bank to make a withdrawal but, as staff were processing his request, "for some unknown reason he took offence at the female staff members and became verbally abusive''.

"During his rant, he hit a Perspex barrier on the top of the counter which broke and hit the staff member in the face.''

The man was located shortly afterwards in the Octagon and arrested and charged with wilful damage and assault.
