Police will respond to drink-driving surge

Dunedin police say they will be stepping up patrols to target anyone drink-driving home from end-of-season sporting group break-ups after 13 intoxicated drivers were apprehended this past weekend.

Acting Inspector Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, said all 13 drivers blew more than the old drink-driving limit of 400mcg per litre, meaning they will be heading to court.

``You can see why we're a bit disappointed,'' Insp Dinnissen said yesterday.

In 2014, the breath-alcohol limit was close to halved, down to 250mcg of alcohol per litre of breath.

Readings between 250mcg and 400mcg do not result in a criminal conviction, but yield a $200 fine and 50 demerit points.

Blowing over 400mcg results in court action.

Insp Dinnissen said the drink-drivers were caught throughout Saturday and Sunday all across Dunedin, and it was unclear what was behind the number of impaired drivers.

``Sometimes we can attribute it to sports clubs but we haven't done enough analysis at this point to see where their last drinks were.''

Those attending end-of-season sports break-ups needed to be aware that they could expect a heavier police presence targeting drink-drivers, Insp Dinnissen warned.
