Rape charge arrest on cruise ship at port

A man arrested on a cruise ship at Port Chalmers over alleged sexual abuse will appear in court on Friday.

The 33-year-old was due up in the Dunedin District Court today but the matter was administratively adjourned without him physically appearing before a judge.

He will remain in custody until the end of the week.

The defendant, who was aboard the cruise ship Noordam, has been charged with sexually violating a woman by rape and by unlawful sexual connection.

Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years' imprisonment.

Both come from alleged acts that took place yesterday.

Police said the man and complainant were known to each other.

Noordam left Port Chalmers at 6pm yesterday and is due to dock in Fiordland National Park this afternoon.
