Church communities across Dunedin took part in re-enactments of the Crucifixion of Christ yesterday, carrying wooden crosses through various suburbs to mark Good Friday.

About 200 people took part in a re-enactment at the Dunedin Botanic Garden.

Actors played Jesus and other figures in the narrative where Christ is accused of subversion, whipped and sentenced to die.

The event took place at various sites around the garden.

The re-enactment symbolises Christ's carrying of the cross to the site of his crucifixion, which Christians mark on Good Friday. They believe he rose again on the third day.
