'Crude' appearance of weirs will improve

The "jumbled and crude" look of the new temporary weirs being installed on the lower Water of Leith will be improved by the time they are complete.

Otago Regional councillor Michael Deaker said at a recent meeting that while the weirs were obviously going to be effective, he had certainly been aware of their "crudeness".

Environmental engineering and natural hazards director Gavin Palmer said the recycled concrete blocks forming the weirs would be capped by a piece of timber and there would be rock "riprap" added around part of the structure.

The concrete blocks were considered to be ecologically desirable, Mr Palmer said.

Effectiveness of the weirs in the trial would be observed and adapted if needed, he said.
