Customers of a Dunedin photo processing shop left in the dark over their missing films are being assured they will be contacted and their photographs returned.

Spectrum Photos owner Logan Miller-Robson said he had apologised to customers and was in the process of returning all the developed films.

He said he was not "fit to keep this business going" after spending two months in Dunedin Hospital and time in the rehabilitation unit at Wakari.

"I had a spinal issue. I fell down some stairs and bruised a spinal cord."

Mr Miller-Robson said he was not released from hospital until Friday, and "I am medically and mentally unfit to be working".

While he had been in hospital there had been a "lack of communication, and I apologise to all customers for that".

"I am still not well at the moment. However, there has been no films lost whatsoever. We have kept everything safe," he said.

Of the customers contacted, none had been unhappy, Mr Miller-Robson said.

"I want to do the best things by my customers and things could have been handled a lot better in the past, and all I can do is apologise for that and try to make things right." Some of the films dated back to 2006, Mr Miller-Robson said.

Any customers unable to be located could check the company's website - spectrumphotos.co.nz - later this week.
