Remedial work on South Dunedin's cycle network has reached the end of phase one and all unwanted infrastructure has been removed.

Many infrastructure additions built for the South Dunedin cycleway were deemed unsuitable in July, and Dunedin City Council infrastructure and networks general manager Ruth Stokes announced they would be replaced.

Council network development and operations manager Michael Harrison said the removal work had gone ahead ''at quite a pace'', thanks to the fine weather of the past few weeks.

All the floating islands had now gone, while the ''ghost markings'' had been covered over.

New markings were ''going in now'', Mr Harrison said, and new signs in the affected locations were also being installed.

That would largely be the completion of the ''stepping back'' works, he said, and it was unlikely more on-the-ground work would occur in the next month ''unless we need to respond to something that becomes an issue''.

Plans for replacement infrastructure were still at a high leadership level, and while there were no timings available for when decisions would be made, it was certain there would be more information available within the month, Mr Harrison said.

The cost of the removal work was expected to be about $20,000, and had been undertaken by contractor Downer.

The cost of the replacement infrastructure would not be known until designs had been finalised.
