But if you wanted to board the Polar Express at Dunedin Railway Station yesterday, wearing pyjamas was part of the deal.
"I wouldn’t wear them to work or the supermarket - that would be disconcerting - but I had no shame wearing them on the train trip.
"It was all a bit of fun."
He, his partner Anne Napper and their two children Lucy and Ollie wore matching onesies on the Polar Express, which was a train trip from Dunedin Railway Station to Hindon and back.
Mr Radburnd said it was the fourth time his Dunedin family had been on the trip because it was a fun recreation of The Polar Express, a 2004 animated Christmas adventure film featuring Tom Hanks.
The film is set on Christmas Eve, and tells the story of a young boy who sees a mysterious train bound for the North Pole stop outside his window in the middle of the night.
He is invited aboard by its conductor, and he joins other children as they embark on a journey to visit Santa Claus, who is preparing for Christmas.

"The kids were so excited to see Santa," Mr Radburnd said.
"They’ve been really looking forward to this for ages.
"And it was good this year because there were no whistles in the presents, so we managed to get back to Dunedin with our hearing intact."
Having a 3-year-old and an 8-year-old made Christmas such a magical time for the whole family.
"I’m loving it."
And the best part about it was, there would be no need to get changed when they got home again, he said.
