Diesel spills on Southern Motorway

Roading contractors spread grit on the Southern Motorway, south of Dunedin, after firefighters were alerted to an extensive diesel spill shortly after 6.30am today.

A Lookout Point fire appliance went to the scene, on a section of highway in the Chain Hills area, between Mosgiel and Saddle Hill, after the diesel had spread, apparently from a northbound truck, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said.

The diesel had spread across more than one lane of the highway on an uphill section, and the extent of spill had been described by a person at the scene as "moderate to large".

Firefighters had remained there until contractors arrived to put grit on the highway, the spokeswoman said.
