Physical disabilities were no barrier for seven Dunedin children who took to the water yesterday.

The children, aged between 5 and 14, tried paddle boarding and kayaking in the Dunedin harbour with the assistance of seven volunteers.

Otago Southland disability sport adviser Bridget Meyer said the event aimed to introduce children to water sports at the start of summer.

"It is also about showing people with differing abilities what is available to them."

Kiringana Cassidy (13,  at right) tried sit-down paddle boarding for the first time with the supervision of Craig Latta, of Dunedin.

He said the experience was "pretty good" and he hoped to do more paddle boarding over the summer.
