Benefits of Moana Pool’s heat recovery upgrade uncertain

Reliance on LPG at Moana Pool in Dunedin is set to be reduced when the heat recovery system is upgraded, but the extent of efficiency gains is not yet clear.

The Dunedin City Council was told this month a quote for the upgrade far exceeded the budget and the project was now in a redesign phase.

The new design would be within budget, council zero-carbon senior policy analyst Rory McLean said.

It was not yet known precisely how effective the new design might be for reducing LPG use, he said.

The pool is a significant consumer of LPG within council operations.

A report for the council’s policy and planning committee said initial advice was improvements to the heat recovery system could reduce pool LPG consumption by up to 60%.

If the new design retained higher LPG use at Moana Pool than initially projected, greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets would be more challenging to achieve, the report said.

A council spokesman said last week the heat recovery unit was at the end of its useful life and needed to be replaced.

‘‘There is a range of ways this can be done and we are working towards a solution that delivers the best outcome within allocated budgets,’’ he said.

‘‘This will reduce Moana Pool’s LPG usage, but the size of the reduction won’t be known until designs are confirmed.’’
