Disorder, drinking keep police 'busy'

Disorder and drunkenness kept Dunedin police busy on Saturday night.

Police arrested 13 people in the city, many near Moray Pl, where Jimmy Barnes performed at the Dunedin Town Hall.

Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said while the number of arrests was not exceptional, it was enough to ''keep them busy''.

''Whether or not it was attributable to the concert or not I have no idea,'' he said.

Two people were arrested in Moray Pl for disorder about 10.40pm, Snr Sgt Brown said.

A Fire Service spokesman said firefighters from Dunedin Central fire station were called to the concert after an internal fire alarm was deliberately set off. The malicious callout had been referred to police.

Snr Sgt Brown said several further arrests for disorder were made early yesterday.

Two people were arrested for fighting in Filleul St about 12.40am and another was arrested about the same time for trespassing in Filleul St.

Another person was arrested for disorder in Frederick St about 10 minutes later and several other central-city arrests followed between 1am and 3am, Snr Sgt Brown said.

''There was a bit of a smattering [of disorder],'' he said.

''It was steady but business as usual.''
