A male driver was left in a pool of his own blood following a brutal assault in South Dunedin yesterday, police say.

The man was taken to Dunedin Hospital with suspected neck and head injuries.

Police located two men in connection with the incident, Senior Sergeant Matt Scoles, of Dunedin, said.

The man was driving along King Edward St just after 11am when an altercation occurred with two pedestrians.

''There has been an issue about the guys being on the road. They have thrown [the driver] a bit of abuse and after he got out of the car, they have set upon him.''

One of the pair knocked over the motorist and the ''other male joined in''.

The victim received multiple kicks to his head and his neck, and ''they have left him lying in a pool of his own blood''.

He remained in hospital last night.

Snr Sgt Scoles said the two men, both aged in their 40s, were later located by police.

Charges had not been laid last night.

It was believed the men did not know the motorist, he said.

Inquiries into the assault are continuing.
