A truck driver was flown to Dunedin Hospital after an incident at Macraes mine this morning.

Macraes Operation acting general manager James Isles said the incident occurred when there was contact between an excavator bucket and the tray of a haul truck in the open pit.

Macraes' emergency response team and St John staff attended, a helicopter was dispatched, and WorkSafe was immediately notified, he said.

The man was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure, given the potential for a head injury as a result of the accident.

“The safety of our staff is always our highest priority. We appreciate the prompt help we received from all emergency services and are cooperating with WorkSafe to investigate the cause of the accident,” Mr Isles said.

“Our worker has been assessed for a potential head injury at the Dunedin Hospital and remains under observation prior to being discharged. We will continue to provide our worker and his family our full support.''
