The smell of burning rubber was a fairly obvious giveaway a burnout competition was being run at Dunedin’s Beachlands Speedway on Saturday.

Tyres were shredded and smoke billowed from them as drivers put on a show.

Speedway vice-president Gareth Kelk said the event attracted 30-odd entries.

Titles up for grabs were best V8, best six-cylinder, crowd favourite, best pit crew and dick of the day.

People had asked the speedway to host the contest and it was the second time it had run there, Mr Kelk said.

Sponsors had been brought on board and there was a bouncy castle for children.

Several drivers noted the burnouts were happening within a controlled environment.

Paul Thomas, of Christchurch, said he was there to support a mate — speedway driver Craig Roberts in his Mazda RX-7.

Mr Thomas described himself as a "petrolhead, all the way".

Jesse Powell, 12, of Balclutha, said it was interesting to watch doughnuts being performed and "sometimes the tyres go on fire".

Neo Bragg, of Invercargill, said he had come to watch the skids.

Sinead Lefale, of Invercargill, said "a few of our mates were skidding today, so we came up to support them".
